The British Dental Health Foundation is urging the public to visit the dentist regularly so that diseases such as mouth cancer can be detected in the early stages.  Mouth cancer kills approximately 1,700 people each year and currently the only way to reduce this number is through early detection.

Of all cancers, mouth cancer has the highest mortality rate.  Fewer than 50% of patients survive more than five years after initial diagnosis because oral cancer is quite difficult to detect early.
