Employee Assistance Programs
What is an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)?
The EAPA (Employee Assistance Professionals Association) describes an EAP as a strategic intervention designed to produce organisational benefit.
An EAP addresses both team and individual performance and the general well-being within the workplace. An EAP assists both employees and managers in addressing personal and work-related concerns, which may or may not affect their performance at work.
Work-related stress can be a major cause of occupational ill health. This means more sickness, absence, high staff turnover and poor performance within your organisation.
EAP's offer your employees not only a 24/7 telephone helpline but also face to face counselling (depending on which plan is purchased).
Counselling can help in the following ways:
- It can help people to respond differently and quickly to stressful or anxiety-creating situations.
- All types of counselling can be helpful. It is more important to see a fully-trained counsellor who could help solve your problems.
- It has been said that successful results can be achieved after as little as 3-8 sessions of counselling.
The aim of an EAP is to enhance the employee's overall well-being and performance, for the benefit of both the individual and the organisation.
